Good to know

  • Guides are required by law for the Maderas and Concepción hikes. Our guides are registered and trained, and they work independently. One guide takes at most 6 people.
  • The lodge arranges guides; it does not guide. Ask the night before. For a bilingual guide, ask earlier, especially from December to April.
More rules
  • On a group hike with a guide, the group stays together. If one person turns back, everyone turns back.
  • If you cancel a tour with a guide on the day, 50% of the agreed price is charged, because the guide loses the chance to take another group.
  • Lunch packs are available. Ask at reception for prices.

On the island, on your own

On the island, on your own: these are places and things you can find without the lodge arranging them. Confirm times and conditions locally.

  • Playa Santo Domingo

On the island, on your own

Four kilometres of sand between the two volcanoes, with warm water and a steady breeze. The lake rises in the rains, so the beach can shrink a lot.

  • Playa Santa Cruz

On the island, on your own

Where the long beach ends, with both volcanoes in view and a relaxed, backpacker feel. It's windy here, which is why the kitesurfers love it.

  • Playa El Perú

On the island, on your own

A calm stretch of lakeshore close to Mérida, known for its sunsets and a swing with a volcano behind it. It's also a handy place to start a paddle to the Istián.

  • Playa Mangos

On the island, on your own

A lively lakeside restaurant and bar with kayaks, and a favorite place to watch the sun drop behind Concepción. To use the beach, you buy something to eat or drink. Keep an eye out for falling mangoes.

  • Black-sand beach at Charco Verde

On the island, on your own

A quiet beach of dark volcanic sand at the edge of the reserve, reached on foot from the lagoon trail. Shady old trees and calm water make it a good place to end the walk.

  • Kitesurfing at Santa Cruz

On the island, on your own

Flat, warm lake water and steady wind, with lessons and gear rental on the island, from roughly late November to May. December to February are the windiest months, and September and October are close to still.

  • Kayak past Monkey Island (Isla El Congo)

On the island, on your own

A tiny islet just offshore, home to monkeys you watch from your kayak. Nobody lands here, because they can bite.

  • Howler monkeys at Charco Verde

On the island, on your own

An easy forest loop of about an hour, where you may hear howlers before you see them. Sightings are never guaranteed. We don't recommend swimming in the lagoon.

  • Baile de los Zompopos

On the island, on your own

During Altagracia's patron saint festival in mid-November, dancers carrying green branches move to drums, recalling a plague of leaf-cutter ants. Ask Noldan what's planned this year, because the format can change.

  • Baile de las Inditas

On the island, on your own

At Moyogalpa's late-July festival, women in traditional dress carry flowers as a promise kept year after year. Ask Noldan what's planned this year.

  • The legend of Chico Largo

On the island, on your own

Locals say a figure called Chico Largo lives at the bottom of the green lagoon and offers lonely walkers a bad bargain. It's the story to ask about after you've walked the reserve.

  • El Zopilote

On the island, on your own

A family-run permaculture farm with shady trails and about 30 ancient rock carvings you can explore on your own. Pick up a map at reception, and don't scratch or chalk the stones.

  • El Pital cacao farm

On the island, on your own

A lakeside cacao farm where the chocolate is made from the tree up, with tours and tastings. There's a plant-based restaurant too, so come hungry.

  • Balgüe

On the island, on your own

The Maderas side's little food village, with farm-grown meals and a slower pace.

  • Moyogalpa at sunset

On the island, on your own

Your first view of the island comes with Concepción right behind the port. A small park by the water is good for watching the boats and the sunset. Save your swim for elsewhere, since lake access here is mostly the busy port.

  • Biosphere reserve

On the island, on your own

UNESCO named Ometepe a Biosphere Reserve in 2010, for its two volcanoes, cloud forests, wetlands and ancient rock art. It's an island worth the extra days.

  • Guides on the volcanoes

On the island, on your own

A local guide is required by law on both Concepción and Maderas. The trails are unmarked and people do get lost, so carry more water than you think you'll need.
